The line graph gives the percentage of older people aged 65 and above in Japan, Sweden and the USA from 1940 to 2040.

In overview, it is notable that值得注意的 the population of elderly people increases in all three countries over the 100 year period. Significantly, Japan’s older population was lower but is expected to rise sharply in around 2030 and overtake Sweden and the USA.

Before the 1980’s Sweden and the USA had a general increase in population over the age of 65 whereas Japan saw a slight decline in this proportion. However, from the end of the 1980s until 2020 the USA plateaued while, in contrast, Japan and Sweden experienced a gradual increase in proportion.

In 1940 at the beginning of the study, Japan ranked lowest at just 5% while the USA figure was the highest at almost 8%. However, although Japan remained the lowest for most of the time, it is predicted to jump significantly in 2030 and will be the highest in 2040, with more than a quarter of its population aged 64 and over.
