CONFIDENTIALITY

Scenario: Joy is your patient in medical ward and was diagnosed with terminal cancer, as the nurse looking after her, she told you not to tell the diagnosis and prognosis to her partner, what would you do?
  • I will provide reassurance to the patient and acknowledge that it is my responsibility to respect patient's right to privacy and confidentiality in all aspects of care, outlining the need to act with honesty and integrity at all times. (duty of candour).
  • I will explore patient's reasons for withholding diagnosis and prognosis from parter.
  • I will offer support and time to facilitate discussion between the patient and partner, respecting patient's decision, linked to duty of candour and confidentiality.
  • I will document the patient's wishes regarding the diagnosis and information sharing.
  • I will acknowledge the partner's concerns and feelings, acting with care and compassion, but explains the need to respect the patient's right to privacy and confidentiality in all aspects of care.
  • I will acknowledge the need to keep to and uphold the standards and values set out in 'The Code' : Prioritise people, practise effectively, preserve safety, and promote professionalism and trust.
